Lowther Castle, near Penrith

Lowther Castle, near Penrith is a fantastic family day out.  Suitable for picnics, long walks round the extensive gardens and of course, possibly the country’s best children’s adventure playground: the Lost Castle.

The castle ruins are also open to being explored, plus there’s an exhibition of the history of the castle and two delicious cafes.

Visiting does however come at a cost, £9 adults, £7 children, concessions £8, family ticket £29 and under 3s free.  10% discount for tickets bought in advance online.  Although it is pricey, you can easily spend all day at Lowther, plus it’s pushchair friendly (mostly firm gravelled paths, although some parts are grassy and/or stoney).  Parking is free.  Postcode for the SatNav is CA10 2HH.

If your legs can walk any further, some of our other family walks near here include Askham and Helton Fells, Wet Sleddale and Small Water near Haweswater.
