Lowther Castle, near Penrith is a fantastic family day out. Suitable for picnics, long walks round the extensive gardens and of course, possibly the country’s best children’s adventure playground: the Lost Castle.

The castle ruins are also open to being explored, plus there’s an exhibition of the history of the castle and two delicious cafes.

Although it is pricey, you can easily spend all day at Lowther, plus it’s pushchair friendly (mostly firm gravelled paths, although some parts are grassy and/or stoney). Parking is free.
