We stopped off to have a look at Spout Force, just to the west of Whinlatter Forest. This walk is best done when the leaves are not on the trees! If you go up there in the height of summer you’re only likely to see this at best:
However, it’s a really easy, short family walk along a lovely bubbling (sometimes raging!) river.
You can park for free in the small layby at GR 178258 and simply follow the path up to the falls, and return back to the car. This is approx 0.75 mile max.
Alternatively you can turn this into a circular walk, parking in the car park at GR 182256, and walking down the road to the start of the path, then looping back through the forest, up to the car. This is just over 1 mile, although it does also include a hill back to the car.
If you fancy stopping off at Whinlatter, they have an excellent play area for the kids, Go Ape, forest trails and cafe / toilets etc. too.
