Thanks to Lee Benson for this contribution to the blog, Low Dodd and Scales Beck, Ullswater.
Today’s walk started at Sandwick, which is about two miles past Martindale Church on the Howtown Road (Ullswater). The car park is small but not often used as most people start walks in this area from Howtown or the Church. The roads are tight but Sandwick is signposted not long after the curch.
After parking join on the Ullswater Way path and follow it in the Glenridding direction until you get to Lowther Barn Cafe. Just up from the barn the path goes up the fell (High Knott) from the path you will start picking up glimpses of the falls but these may disappear as the braken grows.
About 3/4 of a mile up the fell we spotted the summit of Low Dodd, and poking out of the bracken the track that lead here was hard to spot, but did open out. I’m sure in a few weeks there will be a well trodden path through the bracken.
From the top you get great views of Ullswater and Hallin Fell (a family favorite). There is a path that leads down from here which conveniently takes you back the the cafe where you can pick up refreshments, I’d recommend a cup of tea and a Cream Scone.
The Sandwick Car park is a bit of a gem as there are four or five manageable family fells around it and of course the cafe half a mile down the path.
