Post Knott and Brant Fell, from Bowness on Windermere. We parked for free at the top of Helm Road, where the path begins. OS map OL7 GR 409969.

There is a sign for a “permissive path” to Post Knott. Follow this up the gentle incline to the bench and enjoy the views of the lake. There’s a good climbing tree here too!

Turn your back to the lake and look up, that’s Brant Fell. You can walk up any way you like, just keep going up up up until you can’t go up any more!

Amazing views and great rocks to climb on and explore. We did and out and back and it was approx 2km and took us 1.5 hours.

Our 4 year old walked it all with ease. I carried our 2 year old for more than half of it. We stopped for snacks, climbed trees, scaled the rocks and collected sticks! Super fun morning!

You can make it a looped walk by dropping down the other way from Post Knott and walking through Bowness-on-Windermere town, and then back up Helm Road (popping in at The Angel Inn at the bottom of the hill!)

Alternatively you can start at GR404965 (a small road called Post Knott, just off the Kendal Road) and walk up from here.  The first bit of this footpath isn’t on the OS map, but does exist!  Here’s the circular route:
