Catbells, near Braithwaite and Keswick is a great first “proper” fell for young children, although is probably a bit too challenging for most under 3s, and our littlest (age 2) had to be carried most of the way up in the sling. But our 4 year old LOVED it!
It can get very busy, particularly on sunny weekends and holidays, so rock up as early as you can to miss the crowds. We parked in the car park (£3 cash) at GR 247212, and followed the easy to navigate path up up and up! Plenty of rocks to scramble up and stunning views of the surrounding fells and lakes.
Half way up, and we thought we’d made it to the top, but alas there was more, don’t let it fool you!! This was a challenging climb for our 4 year old, but with plenty of snack stops, and some awesome rocks to climb, we made it and had a fantastic time.
Definitely one of our best family walking achievements, and our most tiring! Our promise of cake at the top always puts an extra spring in our step!
