The Helm, Oxenholme, Kendal

The Helm, near Oxenholme, which is just outside of Kendal. We started this walk at The Station Inn. ย It’s a lovely family pub with an awesome playground and bouncy castle (on sunny weekends) and mini golf.

If you’re a customer of the pub, you can park in their car park at grid reference 536900 on OS map OL7. Otherwise you can park for free on the single track road at the start of the walk, just opposite the pub.

The thing I particularly like about this walk is that you can go as little or as far as you like. It’s easy to climb, has stunning views over Kendal and the Lakes and you can also see Morecambe Bay.

We only went up about 0.5km, had our snacks and then returned down. The top is flat for well over half a km, so we still felt accomplished! My 2 year old walked all the way up and down and was very pleased with herself!

If you want to extend the walk you can walk the 1.5km to the official trig point. Then either turn back or make a loop by returning down and along the lower track/road to the pub (loop is clockwise).ย  That is approx 2 miles in total.

We had our lunch in the pub and the kids played happily for ages in the playground, while I sat and watched them and finished my drink on the picnic benches.

For more walks like this, stay up to date and โ€œlikeโ€ our facebook page Family Walks and Pubs in the Lake District

This is the full loop, but you can just do a short out and back for rewarding views and little legs!
