Furness Abbey, Barrow-in-Furness

We found ourselves in Barrow-in-Furness, to the south of the Lake District, on a beautiful sunny afternoon.  We’d heard about Furness Abbey, but never visited.  What an amazing hidden gem!

Parking is free at Manor Rd, Barrow-in-Furness LA13 0PJ.

It’s owned by English Heritage, so is free entry if you’re a member.  Otherwise the entry prices are: £6 adult, £3.40 child, family £15.60, with free parking.  If you can prove that you live in Barrow (utility bill etc) it is also free entry.

The place is amazing!  Huge ruins of the old abbey.  The children absolutely loved clambering over and through it.  As it was a beautiful sunny day, we played games and stayed for several hours, with our picnic.

There’s a very short walk to the back of the abbey, which takes you up for a good aerial view over the ruins.

Walks near here include Sir John Barrow Monument in Ulverston.
