It’s fun to “chase waterfalls” after heavy rainfall… And today we bagged two of them, Moss Force near Buttermere and also Sour Milk Gill, also near Buttermere. There’s been a lot of rain in the past 48 hours and the fells were putting on an amazing show of stunning water power.
We drove from Keswick over Newlands Pass towards Buttermere. There’s free parking at the top (GR 194176 on OS map OL4) and you can take the short and easy (although not pushchair friendly) walk to view the cascade of waterfalls at Moss Force.
It’s only about a 150 metre walk from the car to the falls. Take the left fork to go to the bottom cascade and the right fork to head towards the top one. The rocks here can be really slippy, so please be very careful and only walk within your means.
We spent just under an hour exploring the bottom and top falls and having the obligatory picnic of course! The area has the most stunning views down the Newlands Valley and is a perfect place to get immersed in the Lake District without having to walk too far or too hard.
We returned to the car, drove into Buttermere and visited Sour Milk Gill falls and also the beautiful lake shore.
