Stockghyll Falls, Ambleside

Stock Ghyll Falls, Ambleside. Today was the perfect day for it, wet and drizzly. The falls are in a forest, so you’re somewhat protected from the elements, and the rainfall makes for lots of water over the falls!

Use OS map OL7. If you’re going to be less than an hour (we took 45 minutes ambling round), you can park for free (using a disc) directly outside the entrance to the falls at GR 381045. Enter the one way system heading towards Windermere and take the first left (Stockghyll Lane) after the Salutation Hotel. This road leads up to the falls.

It was just me and my 4 year old today. He’d just got his new walking boots and was keen to try them out! This route didn’t fail to test them – big stones, steps, plenty of mud and puddles! It’s a circular route, steep in parts, but perfectly achievable.

There are two bridges and several viewing areas for the falls. The pictures don’t really do it justice! When you’re there, you are surrounded the constant noisy roar of the falls. Plus at this time of year there’s a lot of wild garlic, which makes the whole place smell rather, Erm, garlicky!! It’s a pretty special place when it’s raining 😀💦
