familywalkslakes

We're an active family, with a 4 and 6 year old, from Bowness on Windermere in the Lake District. This page follows some of our adventures into the fells, pubs and local areas

Hay Stacks

Today was our 100th family walk in the Lake District.  And it was an epic!  Hay Stacks stands 597 metres (1958 feet) in height.  But starting at Honister gives you an advantage as that is 332 metres (1089 feet).  This also makes it a Wainwright fell, to tick off the list! It is 2.2 miles there.  We did an out and back so 4.4 miles in total.

Alcock Tarn, Grasmere

You’ll find Alcock Tarn above Grasmere, in the central Lake District.  It’s beautiful in its own right, and also offers amazing views out over to Windermere, Coniston, Elterwater, Grasmere, Easedale Tarn and beyond!  We did a 2.5 mile clockwise circular route, starting at the Swan Hotel at Grasmere.

Wansfell Pike from Ambleside

Wansfell Pike is a Wainwright fell, offering stunning panoramic views. It stands at 482 metres (1581 feet), just outside of Ambleside in the southern Lake District.  It is a big fell for little legs, and a continuous steep climb.  This route is an out and back, totalling 3 miles.  We’d recommend this walk for older, more capable children walkers or those with young babies that are being carried.

Wythburn, Thirlmere

This beautiful and quiet 1.75 mile walk takes you along the River Wyth Burn into a peaceful valley at the southern end of Thirlmere reservoir.  It’s a fairly easy walk, with only a slight ascent.  It can be boggy in parts, especially after periods of wet weather, so wear appropriate footwear! The kids will have fun clambering over the many different sized rocks along the way.
