Raven Crag, Thirlmere

Situated at the northern end of Thirlmere reservoir, Raven Crag is a short, but steep Wainwright Fell.ย  The route is less than 2 miles in total and is an out and back that gives stunning views over Thirlmere and the surrounding fells.

There is free road side parking for a handful of cars at grid reference 307191 on OS map OL5.ย  Alternatively there is pay and display car parking, just a few metres down the road at GR 307189.ย  This car park has been closed since the floods of December 2015, but is due to reopen at some point.

Additionally, the road that leads across the dam at the northern end of Thirlmere is currently closed to vehicles, due to reopen in Autumn 2017, so use the western lake road to approach the start of the walk.

The walk starts opposite the roadside parking.ย  Follow the footpath up, up and up through the forest.ย  When you reach the track, turn left and follow this up and bends round to the right.ย  Look up and you’ll see the imposing Raven Crag looming over you!

Look out for the footpath to your left towards the top of the track.ย  It’s not signposted, so keep your eyes peeled.ย  It’s a clear path up through the recently felled open forest land.

When you reach the gate at the top, turn left and you make the final ascent up wooden steps to the viewpoint at the top of the crag.ย  This is a Wainwright fell, standing at 461 metres in height.ย  You climb 270 metres (884 feet).ย  It’s steep, but an achievable wainwright with enough encouragement and snack breaks!

Here’s a map of the route:

From the top you can see Fisherplace Gill waterfalls across the reservoir.ย  Another lovely little walk.
