Sella Rock, south of Ulpha

Sella Rock, south of Ulpha village, is a beautiful little picnic spot.  There are several free parking spots in lay-bys along this stretch of road at grid reference 201917 on OS map OL6.  From the A595(T) from Broughton in Furness, turn right onto an unnamed road at Duddon bridge towards Ulpha. The picnic spot is about a mile before Ulpha on the left.

We’ve driven past here many a time, on the way to or from our family walks.  And we’ve often seen people picnic’ing and frolicking by the river bank.  Well today we finally made a stop there!

It’s mid-August at the moment, and the weather was warm and dry, with the river being relatively calm.  I imagine at other times of year this could be a pretty slippery, fast flowing and dangerous spot, so please be careful and judge yourself if it’s safe.

We brought a picnic and let the kids play by the river bank.  Straight away they were in the water, building channels with the pebbles, clambering across the rocks and having lots of fun.

There are no toilet facilities or cafe here, so please come prepared.

Nearby walks that we’ve done include Eskdale and Ravensglass.
