Low Sizergh Barn is a working farm, just outside of Kendal in the Lake District. It offers an amazing farm shop, with crafts and galleries, a delicious tea room and you can even watch the cows being milked.
*edit* May 2017 they’ve added Farm Trail Fairies! Blue & Belle the woodland fairies are joining visitors on the trail!
They need your help to stop Big Old Foot, the clumsy giant, from trampling all the bluebells in our woods.
All you have to do is download The Woodland Trust’s very clever Nature Detectives Family Trail app and then follow our farm trail to the woods.
As you walk, you’ll find clues to scan on your phone and each one will bring the fairies to life.
Pick up a free farm trail map from the farm shop, tea room or shed. (Once in the woods you’ll need to follow the short route to find all 6 clues).
The free Farm Trail takes you on an easy 1.75 mile circular (muddy!) walk through the ancient woodland. It was a bit damp today, but the walk is sheltered in places, so we donned our waterproofs and headed off for an adventure!

Our kids instantly loved this walk, as it starts with a sign, warning you to watch for fairies!
Following the clearly signed and numbered trail, you will soon pass the 700 chickens, which provide free range eggs for sale in the shop. At present (March 2017), the chickens are being kept under cover due to an outbreak of bird flu in wild birds. However, normally you can walk right through all the chickens!
Continuing on we found a frog in the pond, and jumped through lots of muddy puddles (wellies strongly advised!) through the ancient woodlands until we completed the loop back to the car. Watch you go the right way at way marker number 5… through the gate and then left!
If you have a pushchair, this is an accessible walk as far as the pond, although you would probably be better off with an all terrain style pushchair.

Apparently there are several geocaches at this location. We’ve not really done this before, but accidentally stumbled across one! Take a look at the video, and maybe you’ll find it here when you go!
If you want to enjoy another walk nearby, pop across the road to do the Wild Trail at Sizergh Castle.
The farm shop cafe serves up a delicious menu, but if you fancy pub food, we visited The Strickland Arms, just over the road. Real ale, hearty pies and a relaxed family atmosphere.
